Head Coach - George Houston
George Houston was head coach of the Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears for fourteen seasons. As head coach, Houston won 279 games, 10 conference championships and a pair of state titles. Coach Houston was born in Juneau on December 9, 1950. He played on the Bears' state championship team in 1969 under the leadership of Clair Markey, the only person to have coached basketball at all three major levels in Alaska: high school, college, and professional (the CBA Anchorage Northern Knights.) After high school, Houston attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks where he was on the team for three seasons. In the meantime, Markey had moved to Fairbanks to take over the coaching duties at Lathrop High School. It was there that Houston started mentoring Markey when he became Markey's assistant. After graduating from UAF, Houston returned to his home town of Juneau and soon was named the junior varsity coach. After 18 years as JV coach, Houston assumed the head coaching position in 1992. He has been named Alaska's Coach of the Year three times since becoming head coach. He has coached his team to two state championships and he's finished out of the top five in the state only once. |
